Redmond “Red” Gerard born June 29, 2000 in Cleveland Ohio first started snowboarding at the early age of two.

The sixth born of seven children, Gerard hustled hard to keep up with his siblings, using dirt bikes, bicycles and snowboards to stay in touch. By 15 snowboard had developed into something far greater for the teen. He finished fifth in on his Dew Tour slopestyle debut and later that year finished fifth again, at the U.S. Open. His results earned him a spot on the U.S. Snowboard pro slopestyle team.

At PyeongChang 2018 the then 17 year old’s life changed for ever.

The Olympic debutant secured himself a footnote in the history books after he became not only the youngest snowboarding gold medallist, but also the youngest winter Olympian to win a gold since 1928. A brilliantly creative final run, topped with a perfectly executed triple cork rocketed the American from 11th to first, cementing his shift from hopeful rising star to Olympic champion.

Though there was much to celebrate attention circled around what happened to Gerard pre-competition. The rumour went that USA snowboarder overslept and lost his coat in a rush to make it to event. In truth, Gerard only hit snooze a couple of times and borrowed a jacket that wasn’t his. Setting the record straight about his attitude towards competing he said:
