Helga Hoffmann was one of the few athletes starting for Saar and the Federal Republic of Germany. She participated in three Olympic Games from 1956-64 for the mixed German team in the long jump (placing 10th, 6th, 8th respectively), and sixth in the pentathlon in Tokyo. At the European Championships she came in 14th for the Saar in 1954, 7th for West Germany in 1958, and 4th in 1962, when she also won a bronze medal in the pentathlon. In 1966 Hoffmann added another bronze in the long jump. Domestically she was West German long jump champion in 1957, 1961-64 and 1966, and pentathlon champion in 1961, 1963 and 1964.

In 1965 and 1966 Hoffmann was named German Sportswoman of the Year, in 1965 she received the Silver Bay Leaf, and in 1966 she was awarded the Rudolf-Harbig-Gedächtnispreis (Memorial Award). She later worked for the sports department of Saarbrücken.
