German wrestler Georg Gehring won Unlimited Greco-Roman European Championships in both 1926 and 1929 and was third in 1930. He also participated in three consecutive Olympic Games from 1928-36. In Amsterdam he won the bronze medal in the Greco-Roman heavyweight division, in Los Angeles, where Gehring was the German flag-bearer at the opening ceremony, he finished an unfortunate fourth after losing his final match against the would-be Olympic Champion Josef Urban from Czechoslovakia by a decision. Four years later in Berlin, he was eliminated in the third round of the freestyle heavyweight competition.
Gehring won National Greco-Roman heavyweight titles in 1925-26, 1928-1930 and 1936-37, he also had several other podium finishes. He also won four German team championships and competed in 11 international matches. A versatile sportsman, he was a very good track and field athlete and weightlifter.
