William Garcia ran the 1904 Olympic marathon but did not finish. It was a very hot day and the runners ran on very dry, dusty roads, with the leading cars kicking up dust in the runners' faces. Garcia suffered so badly from the heat, dust, and lack of water, that he spent several days in the hospital, his life in the balance, before recovering. He was a native of Oakland, California and worked for many years as a lather.
