Nick Spanakos started fighting as a teenager along with his twin brother, Pete Spanakos, who won a bantamweight bronze medal at the 1959 Pan American Games. In 1960 Nick won the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions and the Intercity Golden Gloves Championships. Spanakos was soundly beaten in the first round at the 1960 Olympics by Soviet featherweight Boris Nikanorov. In 1961 he won the New York Daily News Golden Gloves championship at featherweight. Spanakos would eventually turn pro, but not until 1967, and he fought only one known professional bout, a 4-round victory by decision over Augie Pantellas on 12 June 1967.
