In 1932, Nan Gindele set a world record in the javelin throw with 153-4 [46.73], the first ever recognized by the IAAF, and it lasted as a record for 10 years. She also won the AAU title with the spear in 1933. She was also quite good in the now defunct basketball throw event, held indoors. She won the AAU title indoors in that event in 1933, 1934, and 1936, setting a US record of 101-6¾ [30.95] in 1933 that stood until 1950. Gindele attended Northwestern, represented the Illinois Women’s Athletic Club, and later became a school teacher.
