Matti Sippala was nicknamed “Adonis Hollola” after his birthplace. He was runner-up in the javelin behind Matti Järvinen at the 1934 European Championships, as he had been in 1932. He was also one of the best Finnish athletes in combined events, winning his only Finnish championships in the pentathlon in 1931 and 1935-36 and placing second in the 1930 decathlon. His best placements in javelin at the Finnish championships were silvers behind Järvinen in 1934 and 1935. After his competitive career, Sippila worked as a farmer and manager in the southern Finnish town of Kotka, where he spent most of his life.
