Lothar MILDE

East German discus thrower Lothar Milde finished 12th at the 1960 Roma Olympics, and was eliminated in the qualifying round of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Four years later in Mexico City he won a silver medal for the former GDR. At the European Championships he earned another three bronze medals (1962, 1966, 1969) and a silver one (1971). Domestically he won East German titles in 1961-63, 1968-69, and 1971. From 1966-71 he was the captain of the East German national team.

Milde was educated as a project engineer for tool machinery construction. Eventually he started a career as a politician, first in the former GDR as a labor union official, and after German reunification as the regional chairman of the Metal Labor Union in Sachsen-Anhalt. He was also a Board Member of the East German Athletes Association until 1984. Due to the discovery of his financial irregularities in a university sports club that he led, he lost all his public offices and was sentenced to a prison term.
