Leslie Burton was the former holder of the English 300 yards hurdles record, but his daughter Elaine was far better known than him. Later becoming Baroness Burton of Coventry, she was the Northern Counties ladies’ 100 yards champion at the age of 16 and was a Yorkshire county cricketer and hockey player. She founded the National Fitness Council in 1937 and served as MP for Coventry South (1950-59) before being created a Life Peer in 1962. Leslie Burton’s brother Geoffrey also competed in the 1908 Olympic 400 hurdles.
