Kidd was the only man to win basketball gold with Team USA at Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008 as part of the 'Redeem Team'.

Born in San Francisco to an African-American father and Irish-American mother, he was drafted second overall by the Dallas Mavericks in 1994.

He shared the Rookie of the Year award with Grant Hill and made his first of 10 NBA All-Star appearances in 1996 before leaving for the Phoenix Suns.

Phoenix's fast-paced style suited Kidd who led the league for assists and triple-doubles in 1998-99. The point guard led Team USA in assists and steals per game in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament before going to his first Olympic Games.

In Australia, he averaged just over 20 minutes and came up with a team-high 4.4 assists per game. He also grabbed seven rebounds in the final against France as USA completed a hat-trick of Olympic golds.

After off-court issues saw him traded by the Suns, Kidd joined the New Jersey Nets and reached the 2002 NBA Finals where they were swept by an LA Lakers side spearheaded by Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal.

"My job is not to scream and yell, my job is to cheer you and be positive. If you miss four shots, I'm still going to pass to you."
