A top butterflyer who was eventually surpassed by Michael Phelps, Ian Crocker competed at three Olympic Games, in 2000, 2004, and 2008, winning five medals and three gold medals. His golds came at all three Olympics in the medley relay, and he added a silver in the 100 butterfly at the 2004 Olympics, behind Phelps, and Crocker also won a bronze in 2004 in the 4x100 freestyle relay. At the World Championships he won nine medals, with four golds, winning the 100 fly in both 2003 and 2005. He also won three golds at the Pan Pacific Championships, winning the 100 fly in 2002 and 2006. In all, he won 21 medals and 14 golds at major internationals. Crocker set three world records in the 100 butterfly, one each in 2003, 2004, and 2005, and held that record for six years, until it was broken in 2009 by Phelps. Crocker was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2017. After his swim career ended he became a swim coach in Texas.
