Ski jumper Franz Haslberger came 17th on the normal hill at the 1936 Garmisch Partenkirchen Winter Olympics. In 1936 and 1938 he was the German ski jumping champion in ski jumping, and in the second of those years, he also finished fourth on the famous Oslo ski slope, Holmenkollen. Haslberger was killed-in-action in 1939 at the beginning of World War II, somewhere in the Ukraine. In his hometown Reit im Winkl the ski jump was named after him.
