Bertil Uggla was considered one of the most versatile and successful Swedish athletes of the early 20th century. He competed at the 1912 Olympics in the pole vault and then as a fencer in 1920-28 as well as competing in the 1924 modern pentathlon, winning bronze medals in the pole vault and the modern pentathlon. Uggla was a three-time Swedish champion in the pole vault (1909, 1911-12), and also competed at a high level in the 110 hurdles and decathlon. Ugglas attended the Joinville Military School in France. After turning most of his sporting attention to fencing he won several Swedish titles in foil and épée and in 1934 was on the national team that won a bronze medal at the first European Championships. After his sporting career ended he became an influential sports administrator.
