In 1996, Sandro Cuomo concluded a long and successful international career with an Olympic gold medal, in the team épée competition in Atlanta. The competition was very close: Cuomo’s final hit secured a single touch victory in the quarter-finals, and the semi-final against Germany was only won after a coin toss. At that time, Cuomo’s award cabinet was already filled with three world titles (1989, 1990 and 1993, all with the team), two World Cups and four Italian individual titles. After his active career, he briefly coached the Italian épée squad (2001-2003). Also a sailor, he won the World Championship in the IMS 3 class in 2003.
