Macauley Smith won the IC4A cross-country in 1924, competing for Yale. He placed second in the 1928 Olympic Trials 5K. Smith was a Kentucky native but prepped at Philips Andover Academy and ran for the Boston AA.
Smith earned a law degree and then returned to Louisville, where he served as a circuit court judge. In 1979 he and his wife donated a 170-acre parcel of land to the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission, for “the express purpose of preserving the land for passive recreation.” Smith was inducted into the Andover Athletics Hall of Honor posthumously in 2013.
