A mill worker from Greater Manchester, Herbie Hall won ten national championship titles in the 63 kg and 69 kg weight divisions between 1952 and 1963. He was a member of the British Olympic team at both the 1952 Games in Helsinki and 1956 Games in Melbourne although he exited both competitions at an early stage. Hall was more successful amongst the lesser lights of the Commonwealth Games where he lost the final of the 62 kg in 1954 and narrowly missed a second medal in 1958. Hall died of a heart attack in 2013 just a few weeks after his wife of 65 years passed away.
