Biografia

Ice hockey forward William “Billy” Dawe had his first taste of international hockey when he represented Canada at the 1949-1950 World Championships as a member of the Edmonton Mercurys, helping his team win a gold medal at the tournament. Two years later he was named captain of the team when they were sent to the 1952 Winter Olympics and won Canada’s last Olympic gold medal in the sport until 2002. At the Olympic tournament he played in eight matches and scored six goals. He retired after this, claiming that he had reached all of his goals in hockey, but for many years continued to visit junior high schools during the Winter Olympic season to show his gold medal and answer the children’s questions. As a member of his Olympic team, he was inducted into the Alberta Sport Hall of Fame Museum in 1968.
