Bril first became a Dutch amateur champion at age 15, and was allowed to represent his country at the Olympics while just making the age requirements. Bril would win eight more Dutch titles and the 1935 Maccabiah Games, but he would never compete again at the Olympics. He missed 1932 Games because finances prevented a larger Dutch team, and as a Jew, Bril refused to compete in Nazi Germany in 1936. In World War II, he and his family were deported to Bergen-Belsen, but he managed to surive the ordeal. Ben Bril then became a boxing referee, officiating at various Olympics.
