Bärbel ECKERT-WÖCKEL

Bärbel Eckert married after the 1976 Olympics and started in 1980 as Bärbel Wöckel. She is considered the most successful German female track and field Olympian of all-time, winning four gold medals at the 1976 and 1980 Olympic Games, in the 200 metres and with the sprint relay team both years. After German reunification, she was suspected of systematic doping by Brigitte Berendonk and documents released by the Military Medical Academy in Bad Saarow, but Wöckel took no position on these accusations. She later became a sports administrator within the German Track and Field Association DLV.

Although she never managed to set a world record in an individual event she ran on world record setting 4×100 relays five times. Beside her Olympic medals she was 1974 European Champion in the 4×100, repeating that in 1982, when she also won at 200 metres, and was runner-up in the 100. She took part in the 1977 and 1971 World and European Cups, and her medal collection was completed by 12 national titles.
