Venues overview
Seven newly built and one existing venue hosted the Sarajevo 1984 Olympic competitions. Most have been restored and are currently used for both summer and winter activities.
All the Olympic venues suffered heavy damage during the Bosnian War. With the exception of the ski jumps and the sliding tracks, they have been restored and further modernised since then, partly thanks to international support. Visitors and local residents continue to use them for a wide range of winter and summer sports.
For instance, up to 17 different sports are played at the “Juan Antonio Samaranch” Zetra Olympic complex. The facilities include tennis courts, outdoor football and basketball pitches, indoor and outdoor ice rinks, a billiard sports hall, bowling alleys, a pistol range and a gym.
Igman Malo Polje’s facilities around the ski jumps have been redeveloped and welcome families in both summer and winter. Close by, 15 kilometres of the tracks remain in use for local cross-country skiers at Veliko Polje, whose many trails are popular with Nordic walkers, runners and cyclists.
Two Alpine skiing resorts, Bjelasnica and Jahorina, were built for the Sarajevo 1984 Games. They host thousands of tourists each year, as well as national and international FIS events.
Mount Trebevic, where the Olympic sliding track is located, was a popular leisure spot overlooking Sarajevo. Access to the area is possible again since 2018, after two decades of mines clearing work. The mountain has been reclaimed for the city’s hikers, trail runners and mountain bikers. Though the sliding track remains unfit for official sliding sports competitions, it is used for extreme cycling and as a summer luge training venue.
A new hall was added to the existing Skenderija Complex for the Games. It is still well-known for its basketball, handball, volleyball and table tennis facilities. It also hosts cultural and business activities. In 2019, it staged the opening ceremony of the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival.
The Kosevo Stadium, which existed before the Games, hosted the Olympic Opening and Closing ceremonies in 1984. Today, it is the home of football team Sarajevo FK and the country’s national team. It also plays host to local and national track and field, football and rugby events.
