Led by Nicholas Malouf, the Australian men’s rugby sevens team finished fourth at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The rugby sevens men’s tournament at Paris 2024 saw 12 teams, divided into three groups of four each, compete in the group stage. The top two teams from each of the three groups and the two best third-placed teams from across groups qualified for the quarter-finals
Australia were drawn in Group B alongside Tokyo 2020 bronze medallists Argentina, Samoa and Kenya, Two-time champions Fiji were in Group C with hosts France, the United States and Uruguay while Group A featured New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland and Japan.
Pool A: New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa, Japan
Pool B: Australia, Argentina, Samoa, Kenya
Pool C: Fiji, France, United States, Uruguay
Australia finished the group stage undefeated with comfortable wins over Samoa, Kenya and Argentina. An 18-0 victory over the USA saw Australia reach the semi-finals of a men's rugby 7s Olympic tournament for the first time.
The Australian men’s team was knocked out of the Rio 2016 quarter-finals by South Africa while Fiji were responsible for their ouster in the top eight at Tokyo 2020. The same two teams denied Australia a medal yet again.
A defeat to Fiji in the semis followed by a narrow loss to South Africa in the bronze medal match saw the Aussies stop one win short of what would have been a maiden Olympic medal.
Hosts France upset Fiji in the final to claim the gold medal.
