The Australian women’s football team is making its fifth Summer Games appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The Matildas finished fourth at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and will be searching for their maiden podium finish in Paris. They qualified for Paris 2024 after winning the third and final round of the 2024 AFC Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in February.

With superstar captain and all-time leading goal-scorer Sam Kerr ruled out due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), Stephanie Catley will be donning the armband instead.

Catley will be heading to her third Summer Games while vice-captain Emily van Egmond, Mackenzie Arnold, Ellie Carpenter, Caitlin Foord, Alanna Kennedy, Clare Polkinghorne and Tameka Yallop will also become three-time Olympians in Paris.

  • Group A: France, Colombia, Canada, New Zealand
  • Group B: United States, Zambia, Germany, Australia
  • Group C: Spain, Japan, Nigeria, Brazil

Women’s football at Paris 2024 will be a 12-team affair with the sides divided into three groups of four for the preliminary stage.

After single-legged round-robin matches, the top two football teams from each group and the two best third-placed teams across all groups advance to the quarter-finals.

The Tony Gustavsson-coached Matildas have been drawn in Group B alongside four-time Olympic champions USA, Rio 2016 gold medallists Germany and Zambia.

Australia will take on Germany and the United States in Marseille while the match with Zambia will be held in Nice.

Unlike the group-stage matches, the knockout matches will have extra time and penalty shootouts.

The quarter-finals will be held on August 3 and August 4 while the two semi-finals will take place on August 6 and August 7.

The bronze medal match will be held at the Stade de Lyon on August 9 while the final will take place at the Parc des Princes on August 11.

Australia are yet to win a medal in women’s football at the Olympics. The Matildas came close at Tokyo before losing the bronze medal match to the USA.
