Olympic Moves programme inspiring change

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and its Worldwide TOP Partner, Coca-Cola, is using the language of sport to help young people discover and experience the benefits of an active lifestyle through the sports programme Olympic Moves.  

As the IOC gears up to celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace on 6 April, the Olympic Moves project demonstrates how sport can be a powerful tool to engage with young people, contributing to their development in a positive way and fostering healthier and happier communities. This platform, which was created by Coca-Cola and the IOC in 2001, in partnership with the Dutch National Olympic Committee, is today the largest secondary school sports competition in the Netherlands. Students compete in nearly 20 different sports in regional competitions throughout the school year, culminating in a festival before the summer holidays. 

For over 10 years, this programme has been encouraging change and getting over 150,000 students a year physically active. One such student to have found hope, inspiration and drive through Olympic Moves is Aaliyah. Struggling with school following upheavals in her life, as part of Olympic Moves this young student was introduced to street dancing and joined her school’s team participating in the regional competitions.   

Aaliyah confides: “I decided to work hard and get my grades up. No more coming to class late and getting kicked out. I struggled, but my coach and dance teacher motivated me.”
