Following the Olympic Winter Games and as part of the city’s social housing scheme, the Village’s 639 apartments were made available to families in need of permanent accommodation.
The Village was heavily bombed when war broke out in April 1992. Having shown solidarity with Sarajevo when staging the Olympic Games that same year, the City of Barcelona took charge of rebuilding the Village after the conflict, as part of a United Nations-led strategy. In the Spanish city’s honour, murals were painted on walls in the Village, while the former Olympic Village’s central plaza was renamed Barcelona Square. The two cities twinned in 2000, a year after rebuilding was completed.
