The Olympic Movement is in mourning today following the sad news of the death of Shmuel Lalkin, an iconic figure in Israeli sport.
IOC President Thomas Bach said: “The Olympic community will always honour him for his unwavering belief in the unifying power of sport, despite witnessing one of the darkest moments in our history during the deadly attacks on the Israeli athletes at the Olympic Games Munich 1972. I will remember him for his moving speech at the remembrance ceremony in 2017.”
Immediately following the terrorist attacks, Shmuel Lalkin gave a speech that resonated around the world in which he stated that, despite the attack, Israel would continue to participate in the Olympic Games.
The IOC sends its condolences to his family and to the Israeli NOC. Mr Lalkin was 95.
