International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach and Prime Minister Abe met at the United Nations in New York, where the Sustainable Development Goals have just been approved by world leaders.
The two discussed the role of sport in society and in particular as an “important enabler of sustainable development.” President Bach thanked the Japanese Prime Minister and his government for all they were doing in supporting the role of sport and fully respecting the autonomy of sport.
They also discussed the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and agreed to continue their close cooperation agreeing that it was “in their mutual interests to make sure the Games are an outstanding success for Japan and for the entire Olympic Movement.”
Prime Minister Abe expressed his great confidence that the National Stadium would be finished by January 2020 in time for all the necessary tests and preparations for the Olympic Games.
