Great excitement in Japan as 3.2 million tickets sold during first phase of sales
With a little more than a year to go until the Olympic Games, Tokyo 2020 continues to generate great excitement with an announcement for an additional ticket lottery this year, as well as opening new venues, which show that the country is on track to host spectacular Games.
With the close of the first phase of ticket sales, Tokyo 2020 announced that 3.22 million tickets were purchased by the general public in Japan. More than 90 per cent of those who were awarded tickets through the first phase lottery made a purchase, an indication of the growing passion for the Olympic Games in the country.
For those fans who were not awarded a ticket during the first phase, there will be an additional lottery in August for the opportunity to obtain a wide range of tickets across the Olympic Games programme before another general sales phase opens in the autumn.
A total of 7,508,868 people signed up for Tokyo 2020 ID registrations, the first step required before entering the ticket lottery, and during the ticket application period, the official ticketing website was visited more than 24,250,000 times.
Tokyo 2020 continues to demonstrate that the preparations for the Olympic Games are on track with the recent inauguration of the Kasai Canoe Slalom Centre. Built by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the centre will be the home of kayak and canoe slalom during the Games, and post-Games will be open to the public for canoeing and rafting. It is the latest new venue to open on time, and the construction of Games venues overall continues to be on track.
Organisers also announced that the Olympic Stadium is now 90 per cent complete and due to be completed on time by November. The Stadium will be home to football and athletic competitions, as well as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
