Giving is Winning

Giving is Winning is a world-wide solidarity campaign of the IOC, in partnership with the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and LOCOG (the Organising Committee of the London 2012 Olympic Games) in the run-up to next year’s Summer Games.

You – National Olympic Committees, International Federations, sponsors, recognised organisations, members and supporters of the Olympic Movement - are encouraged to donate sports and casual clothes, which will then be distributed by the UNHCR to various refugee camps around the globe.

Sport has the power to generate hope and joy among people, and with over 30 million refugees and internally displaced people in the world, every item counts! In all, 75,000 items of clothing were collected in the framework of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and you can help us to make it to 100,000 this time!

So join our worldwide team and help us collect clothes for some of the needy millions.

Please write to to coordinate your action with us.

What they say about the campaign:

IOC President Jacques Rogge:
“Everybody should have access to sport – your donation to refugees can make a difference and will contribute to making this aspiration a reality.”

UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres:
“For many young refugees the gift of sportswear associated with famous athletes from across the Olympic spectrum is a tremendous morale booster – a sign that the outside world does still care.”

LOCOG Chairman Sebastian Coe:
“The Olympic Games are not only a celebration of excellence, but also of friendship. Let’s open up our team to refugees across the globe!”
