The publication Vol. XI of The Encyclopaedia of Sports Medicine and the second edition of the Handbook of Sports Medicine and Science on the sport of swimming continues an 18-year tradition of the highly positive contribution of the IOC Medical Commission to the health and welfare of athletes. The Encyclopaedia volumes have covered a wide range of topics within the areas of sports injuries, rehabilitation medicine, physiology, biomechanics and nutrition.

The Handbooks are written on a more practical level and focus either on specific Olympic sports or on specific issues that pertain to all athletes. Thus far, the publications have included running, road cycling, swimming, football, tennis, basketball, volleyball, cross country skiing and Alpine skiing. Issue-specific handbooks address both sports nutrition and strength training for sport.

Produced by the IOC Medical Commission, the Encyclopaedia and Handbook volumes are published through Blackwell Publishing, Ltd., of Oxford, England.
