Many of them take place at the world-class venues from the Olympic Games. For example, the Olympic Pool hosts the country’s national championships and Olympic trials and was also the venue for the 2018 FINA Diving World Series, while the Olympic Basin staged the Canoe World Championships in 1986 and the ITU Triathlon World Championships in 1999 and 2012, among other major events. The Olympic Yachting Centre was the venue for the 2015 Laser Master World Championships, and the Olympic Stadium welcomed the 2017 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships and matches at both the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 and the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015. It will also be used for the FIFA World Cup United 2026.
Away from its former Olympic venues, Montreal continues to attract top-level sporting events, chief among them the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, which will stage the event through to 2029. The city also hosted the 2005 FINA World Aquatics Championships and alternates with Toronto as the venue for the Canadian Open tennis tournament.
