The International Olympic Committee and its Medical Commission have launched in view of the Athens Games, a practical guide to eating for health and performance. The guide, “Nutrition for Athletes” was prepared by the Medical Commission’s Nutrition Working Group and is based on the International Consensus Conference held at the IOC in Lausanne in June 2003. Coca Cola, an IOC TOP sponsor, has designated Powerade as the IOC’s promotional partner for the booklet.
The “Nutrition for Athletes” booklet contains information that can help athletes to make informed choices to meet their nutritional needs in different situations. It is no substitute for individual advice from a qualified professional, but tries to give practical information that will be of use to the athlete.
The booklet has a final summary in the form of the “IOC Consensus Statement on Sports Nutrition 2003”, in which it underlines that “good nutritional practice will help athletes train hard, recover quickly and adapt more effectively with less risk of illness and injury”.
The statement warns athletes against the dangers as to the indiscriminate use of dietary supplements. It further underlines: “There can be no guarantee of the purity of any commercial supplements. The only way to be sure is to avoid supplements altogether.”
The booklet, laid out in an attractive way, allows the athletes to find easy, practical tips, such as: “How to estimate your sweating rate”, “Ideas for post-exercise recovery snacks” and “Strategies for high energy eating”.
