Unifying the Japanese population

Hosting the Olympic Games gave Japan an opportunity to bring people together and present itself to the rest of the world as a harmonious and unified nation.

Communication channels for the Games and the widespread television coverage of the Games meant Tokyo 1964 was a shared national experience, and repeated replays of the Official Film in the coming decades cemented the memory of the Games in the national consciousness.

The popularity of Tokyo 1964 meant that older generations who witnessed those Games were particularly supportive of Tokyo’s candidature for the 2016 edition, with many saying that they wanted the Games to return to Japan because of fond childhood memories from 1964.
