Shozo Makino set his first national record in 1929 in the 1500 metre freestyle. In the following years, he added records over various distances between 300 and 1500 metre freestyle. After winning the silver medal in the 1500 metre at Los Angeles in 1932, he won a bronze medal in the 400 freestyle at Berlin in 1936. The Waseda University student set the first of several world records in the 800 free in 1931 at a Japan vs. USA meet. During the time between the Olympics he also set world records in the 400 metres and the 4x200 free relay. In 1991 he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
