Richard Hayley Lever was an Australian-born American painter, etcher, lecturer and art teacher. He studied at the Prince Alfred Cultural Institute in Adelaide, the New York Art Students League, the Académie Julian in Paris and in London. Lever was named professor in New York in 1919 and taught until 1931. He was known for his town-shore landscapes and still-life painting in a style that combined impressionism with vivid colors and strong lines of realism to post-impressionism. In his use of color, he was deeply influenced by famous painter Vincent Van Gogh.
