With four individual gold medals in the 1904 Olympic cycling events, Marcus Hurley tied a record for individual golds at one Games which stood until Eric Heiden's domination of the 1980 speed skating events. Hurley was the greatest American amateur racer of the time. He won the U.S. amateur sprint championship from 1901 until 1904 and was world amateur sprint champion in 1904, as well. Hurley is in a hall of fame – the College Basketball Hall of Fame. He played for Columbia, captained them in his senior year (1908), and was named all-America from 1905 through 1908. He also captained the New York AC team which won the Metropolitan championship in 1905. Hurley went on to a career as a consulting engineer.
