Luigi Arienti was one of Italy's top amateur cyclists when he was selected to race in the team pursuit at the 1960 Rome Olympics. Coming from behind in the final, the Italians defeated Germany by nearly five seconds to win the gold. Arienti immediately turned to professional road racing, but returned to the track. From 1961 to 1965, he finished second in the Italian individual pursuit championship, behind former Olympic champion Leandro Faggin. He was also active in six-days racing, and twice participated in the World Championships in the 50 km. motor paced event, but without success. He ended his career in 1972.
