Kurt Ettinger was Austrian champion in foil (1923, 1929, and 1931) and sabre (1928 and 1931). He was an Austrian Jew who left Austria for Paris at the time of the Anschluss. In May 1941 he came to the US and became a US citizen, changing his first two names from "Kurt Erich" to "Curtis Thomas". He served in the US Army from December 1942 to July 1943, and later died while on a family vacation in Innsbruck, Austria.
