The daughter of Olympic weightlifter Robert Skolimowski, Kamila Skolimowska became the youngest ever Olympic hammer throwing champion, men and women. Contesting the inaugural women's gold in the event, Skolimowska was a surprise winner, just one month shy of her 18th birthday. She never again won an international title, but remained a fixture in hammer throw finals. She placed fourth at the 2001 and 2007 World Championships and fifth at the 2004 Olympic Games. At the European Championships, she medalled twice, winning silver in 2002 and bronze in 2006. She also won the Universiade gold in 2005. While on a training camp in Portugal, Skolimowska suffered a pulmonary embolism and died, aged only 26.
