Japanese painter Junbei Eto enrolled in 1918 in the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and studied under Yōga painter Saburosuke Okada. His first major success was the first prize for In the studio at the Emperor’s exhibition in 1924. In 1932 Eto was again successful with the “Indoor nude.” He was also a member of the board of the Koufukai group of artists.

After the war Eto continued to participate in Koufukai as well as in re-organized Fine Arts exhibitions. While before the war he was more known for his portraits, he later focused on landscapes. Due to his preference for French painting his style was referred to as the Cezanne of the cursive style. Eto died at the age of 89 in a Tokyo hospital from a cerebral hemorrhage.
