Josef Pöttinger was the first famous center forward of FC Bayern München, entering their first squad at age 16. His style of play made him a crowd favorite. He played his first international match on 18 April 1926, with Germany defeating the Netherlands, 4-2, as Pöttinger recorded a hat trick. He earned a total of 14 international caps, scoring eight goals. At 29, his career ended abruptly, as he retired after a tibia fracture. Pöttinger was a trained fitter, then a sports teacher, and later owner of a football pools filing office in München close to the Hofbräuhaus. Between 1934-47 he also coached several clubs.
