Jesús Miguel Rollán was Spain's goalkeeper throughout the most successful period for the country's water polo squad. After losing the final of the 1992 Olympics, the 1991 and 1994 World Championships and the 1991 European Championships, Spain finally struck gold in Atlanta, winning the Olympic gold. Rollán and Spain continued their success streak at the 1998 and 2001 World Championships, winning both competitions. In club competition, Rollán was mostly active for CN Catalunya, winning seven Spanish titles, seven domestic cups and the 1995 European Cup. He added a second European Cup in 2003, playing for Italian team Pro Recco. Retiring after the 2004 Olympics, Rollán fell into a depression, and was sent to a clinic for treatment. In 2006, he fell from the balcony of this clinic and died. While generally considered an accident, it has been suggested that Rollán committed suicide.
