West German long distance runner Horst Flosbach placed eighth in the 1960 final over 5000 m at the Rome Olympics as the third best German behind Hans Grodotzki and Friedrich Janke, although he had won his heat. This was his only international major event. His two domestic titles were in 1961 in cross-country and in 1964 over 10,000 m. He was educated as a textile engineer. In his youth he has been a football player and wanted to become a cyclist, but his parents would not buy him a racing bicycle.
