Although Hjalmar Nyström never won a major international tournament title, he is still considered the most dominant Finnish heavyweight wrestler of the 1920s and 1930s. Representing Finland internationally in both styles of wrestling, Nyström won Olympic Greco-Roman heavyweight silver in 1928 and Olympic freestyle heavyweight bronze in 1936. He also captured European Championships Greco-Roman heavyweight silver medals in 1920, 1931 and 1935 and European Championships freestyle heavyweight bronze in 1934. Domestically, Nyström won 10 Finnish Greco-Roman heavyweight titles (1924, 1926-28, 1930-31, 1935-37, 1939). By profession, Nyström was a steam locomotive fireman (stoker) and later a train driver.
