Hermann Haverkamp played for the West German water polo team that finished 10th at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, losing 7-5 to Spain in the final round. He also came in fourth four years later in München. In total, he earned 197 international caps. Later married to swimmer Wiltrud Urselmann, he played nationally with ASC Duisburg, helping them to win West German titles in 1963, and 1965-67.

As a swimmer, Haverkamp set a world record in 1962 with a West German 4x100 freestyle relay before a US quartet retook the record later in the day in another country. Haverkamp later worked as a water polo coach at SV Bayer 08 Uerdingen.
