Field handball was only part of the Olympic program once, at the 1936 Berlin Games. The German Reich dominated their two preliminary round matches, beating Hungary 22-0 and then the USA 29-1, before winning all three matches in the final round, including a 10-6 win over Austria in the deciding match that won the gold medal. Goalkeeper Heinz Körvers played two matches in Berlin including the match against Austria, and won a total of five international caps.

He won the Westphalian Championship in 1933-35 and German Championship in 1936, with MSV Hindenburg Minden. In 1939 he was runner-up with Lintforter SV, losing the final against MTSA Leipzig 4-6. The following year he won his second German title with Lintfort. Körvers worked as a miner before he was recruited for World War II. He was listed as missing-in-action near Stalingrad since 29 December 1942. He was officially declared dead on 31 March 1954 with official date of death listed as 31 December 1945.
