George Halbout studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs and was a prisoner-of-war in World War I, having been arrested in a Swiss house in 1916 while he was working for the US Army as a translator. He then painted portraits of his fellow POWs. In 1918 he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Later he shared his studio with Paul Belmondo, father of the well-known actor Jean-Paul Belmondo. After settling in Algiers he became a professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts there. In 1966 he moved to Bourdeilles. He primarily worked in terracotta and bronze, especially in his studio in Algeria.
