American graphic artist George Hill, husband of Polly Hill won an Honorable Mention at the 1932 Art Competitions in the category of graphic art paintings for his work Surf Fishing. He was one of the first black painters in the United States who gained fame in the 1930s and 1940s. Nevertheless, many of his works were ignored, not published, or simply stolen in the USA, which still had legal racism.

Hill was a painter and sculptor, but gained most of his attention with murals mostly in the style of American realism. Hill studied at various academies in Pennsylvania and New York, and subsequently in Paris. Later, he ran his own art school in St. Petersburg. His oil paintings emphasized figures, genre scenes, landscapes and marine life. Their satirical and cartoon-like elements often brought public criticism. .
