Mario Tullio Montano was a part of the Montano fencing dynasty, which encompassed six different fencing Olympians. In addition to his two Olympic medals (gold at München in 1972 and silver at Montrèal in 1976) MT Montano won three bronze medals in team sabre at the World Championships – Vienna 1971, Goteborg 1973, Grenoble 1974.
Mario T. Montano was the nephew of the founder of the Montano fencing family, Aldo Montano who opened the collection of Olympic medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics with two silver medals in sabre. Two of Mario’s brothers, a cousin, and his own nephew, also Aldo Montano, also competed at the Olympics.
