McLaughlin was perhaps born to be an athlete. Her dad, Willie, was a semi finalist in the 400m at the 1984 Olympic trails, while her mum was also a runner and her brother got silver at the 400m hurdles at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships. But Sydney has outdone them all: she is an Olympic gold medallist and 400m hurdle world record holder.

McLaughlin's potential to make history has long since been written on the wall. She competed at Rio 2016 at the age of just 16, having qualified third in the US national trials – and eventually finished 16th overall, being eliminated in the semi finals. At the time, her age caught the headlines: McLaughlin was the youngest athlete to qualify for the USA track team since 1980.

While she wasn’t expected to medal at such a young age, athletics fans still believed they saw a star in the making - and they were right to sense so. At the 2019 World Championships in Doha the young American won silver in the 400m hurdles.

“I knew the race would be fast,” said McLaughlin after the Worlds. “But I didn’t think it would be that fast. I’m still young and I’ve learned so much.”

When it comes to racing the hurdler has a simple approach:

“For me it’s kind of just focusing on myself and making sure I’m doing everything possible to be successful." Though, she admits, she wasn’t always so committed to winning. Her dad Willie used to bribe her to run with confectionary. “He said, ‘If you run, I’ll give you a chocolate bar.’ I ran the 100 meters and actually won,” says McLaughlin. “I think I was more excited about the chocolate bar than the fact I won. I guess he lured me into the sport.”

In the build up to Tokyo 2020 McLaughlin's race was billed as 'one-to-watch'. She who had denied McLaughlin in Doha by 0.07 seconds was her American teammate, and 2016 Olympic champion Dalilah Muhammad. Their tussle for the number one spot has become well documented, so who be victorious on the track in Tokyo?

Not only was it McLaughlin who emerged triumph but in the process, she smashed the elusive 52-second barrier with an astonishing time of 51.46. Muhammad too also went sub-52 but behind McLaughlin.

"“I'm absolutely delighted," the newly crowned champion said. "What a great race. I'm just grateful to be out here celebrating that extraordinary race and representing my country."
