Biographie

Sergio González graduated from the faculty of engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1950, and then earned an additional degree in soil mechanics from Harvard the following year. He then went on to have a distinguished engineering career that included faculty appointments to several universities in Mexico and the United States, specializing in structural reconstruction after earthquakes. He consulted on projects in North and South America, as well as Tanzania, France, and Germany. In the midst of it all, he had time to represent Mexico in the Flying Dutchman class at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where he finished 21st and last with Alfonso Serrano. González retired in the late-1980s, but remained active academically for many years thereafter.
